MEET THE NEW L.B.A. PRESIDENT
THOMAS R. SULLIVAN

Tom is a native New Yorker who was born, raised and educated in Brooklyn. After completing elementary school at St. Catherine of Genoa, he attended Brooklyn Technical High School. Upon graduation from Tech, he attended C.U.N.Y.; first at Kingsborough Community College and finishing at John Jay College. Tom comes from a long police lineage. His grandfather and father were Police Officers in the N.Y.P.D. He also had several uncles and cousins in the N.Y.P.D. With this many cops in the family, conversations at the dinner table were usually about the JOB.

Tom began his police career with the N.Y.C. Transit Police Department. He was appointed to the Department on May 20, 1974, and assigned to Transit District 33 in East New York, Brooklyn. After enduring a 22 month separation from service caused by the City’s fiscal crisis of 1975, he was assigned to District 32. As a police officer he was active in the Transit Police PBA serving as a delegate and being elected to the post of Brooklyn South Trustee in 1982. Tom was promoted to Sergeant on December 16, 1985 and was assigned to T.P.F., District 30, Brooklyn/Queens Task Force and the Borough Command for Transit-Brooklyn. Tom was also active with the Transit SBA and was elected to Recording Secretary in 1990 and 1st Vice President in 1993. Tom remains active in several fraternal groups, i.e. Emerald Society, Holy Name Society, N.Y.P.D. Honor Legion and the State of New Jersey Honor Legion. He served as the Transit Police Honor Legion President for seven years, from 1988 through 1995.

On December 20, 1995, post merger, Tom was promoted to Lieutenant. He has worked in Transit District 2, Transit Borough Manhattan, and also served as the Transit Bureau Personnel Officer. In July, 2003, Tom was transferred to the Office of the Chief of Detectives. On May 28, 2004, he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander of Detectives. Throughout his tenure in the rank of Lieutenant, Tom was active in the Lieutenant’s Benevolent Association. He has held various positions over the past ten years. He served as Delegate, Transit Bureau Director, 2nd Vice President, Recording Secretary and 1st Vice President since September, 2007.

Throughout Tom’s police career, he has held Union Executive Board positions in the rank of Police Officer, Sergeant and Lieutenant. He brings an abundance of knowledge and experience to the table. His collective bargaining dealings with the N.Y.C. Office of Labor Relations as it pertains to contract negotiations spans the last twenty-five years.

Tom has been married to his wife Marie, for twenty-one years and they have five children, one of whom, is a Police Officer assigned to the Nassau County Police Department. Tom is also the proud grandfather of three grandchildren.
